Stance on Fossil Fuels

The possibility of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGS) and sustainable development by the Palestinian National Authority (PNL) is heavily influenced by the enduring conflict within the region, the blockade of Gaza and the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land for five decades. It is estimated that in the period 2007-2017 Palestine has lost nearly 48 billion dollars’ worth in fiscal revenue due to Israeli occupation. The Palestinian people face destruction and confiscation of property, loss of access to water, land and other natural resources. The oil and gas reserves within the territory of Palestine are exploited by Israel and therefore cannot be used for the human and economic development of Palestine.

The continued natural resource exploitation, discriminatory practices and occupation by Israel has actively hindered economic and social development in Palestine. Israel fully controls Palestinian trade which limits the access to international markets and natural resources. The issue of climate change and sustainable development is therefore not a top priority for the Palestinian state as it does not have full control over its natural resources and the ability to take part in a free market.
