Climate Negotiations

Marrakech Partnership

The Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action is an initiative launched in 2016 to strengthen collaboration between governments and non-state actors, such as businesses and cities, to combat climate change. It promotes and tracks climate action across sectors like energy, transport, and agriculture. The partnership supports the implementation of the Paris Agreement by encouraging ambitious climate efforts. It provides a platform for sharing best practices and scaling up climate solutions. The partnership aims to enhance global climate resilience and reduce emissions to meet international climate targets.

Stance on Climate Negotiations

This partnership underscores the importance of immediate action and a system-wide transformation to address climate challenges. The Marrakech Partnership’s focus is on bridging gaps between stakeholders to promote concrete, science-aligned strategies to reduce emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

A core part of its strategy involves the "ambition loop," a feedback mechanism where government policies and non-state actions mutually reinforce each other to elevate climate ambitions. The Marrakech Partnership also actively supports developing countries and vulnerable communities in increasing climate resilience, linking local actions with global commitments. Efforts include initiatives like the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns, which engage non-state actors in emissions reduction and climate adaptation efforts.

By fostering “inclusive multilateralism,” the Partnership emphasizes a diverse, collaborative approach, ensuring that stakeholders from all regions are represented and equipped to contribute to climate goals, especially in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNFCCC objectives
