Climate Negotiations
Like-Minded Developing Countries (LMDCs)
The Like-Minded Group of Developing Countries (LMDC) represents over 50% of the global population. It is a coalition of developing nations that coordinate as a negotiating bloc in international organizations like the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.
Stance on Climate Negotiations
The LMDCs argue that developed countries, being historically responsible for most greenhouse gas emissions, should take on a larger share of the financial and technical burdens in combating climate change. They maintain that developed nations must fulfill their climate finance commitments to support developing countries’ adaptation and mitigation efforts, demanding at least the promised $100 billion annually
The LMDCs also resist calls for uniform net-zero targets, arguing that imposing the same targets on developing countries would constrain their economic growth and hinder poverty reduction. Instead, they support a flexible approach that recognizes each country’s development needs. During recent COP meetings, LMDCs have strongly criticized any pressures for accelerated action from developing countries without corresponding support from wealthier nations, viewing this as inequitable and inconsistent with the Paris Agreement principles
By holding firm on issues of climate finance, technology transfer, and differentiated responsibilities, the LMDCs aim to ensure that climate action does not disproportionately impact the economic stability of developing countries.
