Climate Negotiations

Youth Peoples

YOUNGO is the official group of children and youth constituencies in the UNFCCC. It is an independent network with a membership that consists of many NGO’s, organisations, groups, delegations and individual young people. Together, they strive to empower youth to formally bring their voices to the UNFCCC processes and want to promote youth participation in climate change projects at local and national levels.

Stance on Climate Change Negotiations

The organisation has set out three key objectives:

  • Ensure that youth views and proposals are fully integrated into global climate policymaking and dialogues;

  • Build youth skills, capacity, knowledge, and networks, particularly in the most impacted countries, to engage in climate processes;

  • Provide a model for the COP process on youth inclusion.

In achieving these objectives, YOUNGO focuses on the following areas:

  1. Awareness, knowledge and capacity building;

  2. Collaboration, cooperation and network;

  3. Policy, lobby and advocacy;

  4. Youth action.

A fun fact about YOUNGO is that’s a relatively new partner at the table of the UNFCCC. In 2009, the UNFCCC secretariat and its member states officially recognized the group as an observer constituency. Subsequently, in 2011, the constituency confirmation meant that YOUNGO was formalized to represent the official voice of children and youth in UNFCCC practices.
