'Loss and Damage'

Palestine

Palestine, an area of the eastern Mediterranean region comprising parts of modern Israel and the Palestinian territories of the Gaza Strip (along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea) and the West Bank (west of the Jordan River).

Stance on 'Loss and Damage'

Palestine ratified the Paris climate agreement and published its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It receives funding for climate adaptation and mitigation through the Green Climate Fund.Palestine wants to ensure it remains attractive for climate funding. One way is through funding of a transparent Climate Change Financing Framework.

How communities negatively experience climate change can be seen through the division between the Global North and South. Palestine suffers from a phenomenon called green colonialism similarly to other nations in the Global South. Israel limits Palestine’s ability to participate in climate adaptation and access to their resources, often dumping waste in the Palestinian territories leading to public health issues.

Loss and damage are the negative effects that occur despite climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts. There is a significant risk of increased droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, floods and negative health effects for Palestinians due to climate change. The environment of Gaza is vulnerable because of conflict, rapid urbanization and high population density. Since October 7, 2023, water, air and soil pollution have become rampant and this may lead to a longer recovery period for the people and environment of Gaza.
