Fossil Fuels

Youth Peoples

YOUNGO is the official group of children and youth constituencies in the UNFCCC. It is an independent network with a membership that consists of many NGO’s, organisations, groups, delegations and individual young people. Together, they strive to empower youth to formally bring their voices to the UNFCCC processes and want to promote youth participation in climate change projects at local and national levels.

Stance on Fossil Fuels

To YOUNGO, including and supporting youth in the debate on the mitigation process is essential. In that process, they stress the need for a successful, just and timely energy transition. To that end, YOUNGO urges countries to rapidly phase out the use of all fossil fuels. Only with this ‘road to net-zero’, a Paris-aligned future is feasible to come into existence. With that, the focus must not be put on the withdrawal of fossil energy sources, but on building a sustainable and clean energy system for all. To do just that, YOUNGO demands that everyone makes the right decisions. That means not only national governments, but also cities, subnational governments, banks, and businesspeople. Some are leading by example, as they have endorsed the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty.                                                                                The aim is not only to make the transition, but also to achieve it in a just way. Therefore, climate finance needs to be scaled up. YOUNGO is pushing for a fundamental reform of the International Finance Architecture to guide financial flows in line with the Paris Agreement and promote equitable burden sharing for Global South countries.

In times where the truth about fossil fuels is more widespread, it apparently is time for desperate measures. Shell launched a marketing campaign for their “ultimate road trips”, advertising a new gasoline it calls V-Power Nitro+.  They paid influencers to promote this to young people in videogames, such as Fortnite, which sparked controversy.
